The University of Wisconsin Badgers pulled off the upset Sunday afternoon, defeating the No. 1 seed Ohio State Buckeyes to capture the NCAA women’s hockey title in Duluth, Minnesota.

For the Badgers, which includes Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler at forward, the title was the seventh in the school’s history, the most ever in the NCAA. Ohio had entered the tournament looking to repeat as champions and were the favourites to do so.

The Badgers got their lone goal from Kristen Simms in the first period and held on for the win courtesy a 31-save shutout from Cami Kronish.
