A slow start was enough to doom the NDSS Golden Hawks senior boys’ football team in their 48-16 home loss to to the Regi Panthers.

The Panthers built a 20-0 lead heading into the second quarter before the Hawks could find their footing.

After some early miscues the Hawks did gain some momentum as Josh McNamee broke through the Panthers’ defensive line and into the end zone for NDSS’ first score of the game. Disaster turned to good fortune on the field goal attempt when kicker Nate Gifkins recovered after nearly fumbling the snap. He quickly abandoned the kick and instead ran it in for an extra two points. Napanee kept that momentum going on the ensuing kick-off when Gifkins launched the ball all the way through the end zone for a one point rouge, cutting the deficit to 20-9.

A break down on defense towards the end of the first half halted NDSS’ momentum, allowing Regi to go for a long touchdown and once again regain control of the game, en route to the 48-16 victory.

The loss drops Napanee’s record to 2-3 on the season. They entered the game coming off a a 30-10 road victory over Bayridge the previous week. McNamee, Connor Birney and Scott Scrimshaw each scored for the Hawks.

NDSS will have a chance to secure a playoff spot when they welcome the Kingston Secondary School Bears for a 12 p.m. kick-off on Oct. 26 to wrap up the regular season.

In the junior football game the NDSS Hawks were shutout by Regi, falling 50-0. NDSS’ juniors continue to search for their first victory of the season.

On the basketball court, NDSS’ junior girls fell 49-29 to Sydenham, while NDSS’ seniors lost 58-21.

NDSS’ junior boys volleyball team was swept in three sets against Sydenham while the senior Hawks edged the Golden Eagles 3-2.

Napanee’s field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-4-2 record, placing them sixth in the KASSAA league standings. They’ll take on the third seeded Frontenac Falcons on Monday in the KASSAA quarter-finals. The winner will advance to Tuesday’s semifinal with the finals set for Oct. 26.
