Police seek public’s help to identify suspect seen driving stolen vehicle

Lennox and Addington OPP are searching for this suspect who was seen driving a stolen vehicle while driving recklessly on the 401.

The Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was dispatched to a stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on Hwy 401 at Napanee on Thursday around 7:45 a.m.

The vehicle had been stolen from a residence in Mississauga and the owner was tracking it by an Apple air tag.

OPP members located the vehicle and started to follow it. The vehicle went to exit the highway at Highway 38, before exiting, the vehicle took an abrupt turn back onto the highway and accelerated from police at a high rate of speed. At this time, police had not attempted to conduct a traffic stop but were following the vehicle. The vehicle then proceeded at a high rate of speed eastbound. Police were unable to catch the vehicle and due to public safety, the police then stopped following the vehicle.

The vehicle then proceeded to exit at Division Street at a high rate of speed, driving very dangerously, swerving in and out of vehicles, almost causing several collisions. When exiting on the ramp, the vehicle struck a white Volkswagen Jetta from behind, causing it to go into the ditch. The vehicle then proceeded to continue eastbound attempting to get back on the highway where it crashed into the south ditch of the ON-Ramp. The suspect left the vehicle on foot and was not observed by police.

Police then set up containment at the location attempting to locate the suspect. K9 attended and conducted a track with negative results. Police canvassed surrounding businesses in the area with negative results. Kingston Police also attended and assisted with K9 support and containment of the area.

Police were then advised by Tyendinaga Police Service that the suspect had attended a shop on the Reserve. A photo of the suspect was obtained and video footage of the suspect entering and exiting the store.

The driver of the Jetta suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital as a precaution. The investigation is ongoing to identify the suspect.
