Napanee’s Grace Hearns has been named the OCAA women’s softball player of the year.

Now in her third year with the Durham Lords, the catcher/utility player excelled both behind the plate and beside it, turning in great defense and a potent bat.

She played in all 24 of the Lords’ regular season games, cranking out 46 hits in 87 at bats, good for a .529 average which was second in the OCAA. She also drove in 27 runs over those 24 games, smashing a pair of home runs, four doubles and 10 triples. She scored 40 runs while leading the league in stolen bases. Always a tough at bat, she struck out just five times the entire season.

She led the league in total hits and triples while finishing in the top three for runs scored and total bases. Hearns was also named to an OCAA all-star for a second straight season. Hearns paired well with Lords starter Emily Glendinning, who also earned an all-star nod. Working with Hearns behind the plate she had a league best 0.53 ERA wotj 48 strike outs over 40 innings.

The Lords are now into the 0CAA Women’s Softball Championships, which take place this weekend in Etobicoke.
