A Napanee family is doing their part to support the victims of the Ukraine war, one blue and yellow ribbon at a time.

George Hutzel, along with his wife Kristin Scorgie and daughters Bella (age 8) and Poppy (age 4) began making the ribbons as a show of support. George has Ukrainian heritage and wanted to do something to help while the rest of the family felt compelled to help after hearing of the tragedies being endured overseas. When his daughters brought a few in for their Southview Public School classmates and teachers, requests began to grow for more.

“It kind of snowballed from there, people started asking do the kids have a fundraiser going, do they have a charity that they’d like to teachers to donate to on their behalf?” said Scorgie. “That’s when we decided to officially do some fundraising.”

After reviewing several charities they settled on the Humanitarian Coalition.

As of Tuesday they’ve raised $2,390, nearly halfway to their goal of $5,000. To donate to their cause, visit https://donate.humanitariancoalition.ca/ui/fundraiser/participant/7540318.

Scorgie says they strive to have informative conversations with their girls about what is going on in the world and have had several age appropriate discussions about the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“We’ve put a big emphasis on things that we can do here and ways that we can help,” said Scorgie.
