McDonald’s Napanee was serving up a cup of coffee for a good cause today, with 50 cents from each java sold going to support the Alzheimer’s Society of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.

Volunteers are also on hand until 3 p.m. today to collect loose change at the drive-through as well as in the dining area. Along with collecting quarters and loonies, they were also there to talk a bit about the organization. The local chapter recently opened satellite offices in Sharbot Lake and Northbrook, with plans to open soon in Napanee.

“The most important part (about being at McDonald’s) is about awareness,” said Pam Lemke, education and family support worker for Central Frontenac, North Lennox Addington County Alzheimer’s Society. “I’ve put pamphlets in the Coffee Break and our location and contact information. People I see are reading them and taking them so it’s been great.”

The local branch was one of several that were collecting money at their local McDonald’s as part of World Alzheimer’s Day, which has been held annually on Sept. 21 since 2012.

It’s been estimated that over 4,000 residents within KFL&A are living with some form of dementia with that number expected to more than double within the next decade.

That’s why the money raised for research as well as getting the word out about their services is crucial.

“They’re for caregivers and clients and extended family that might be helping out as well,” Lemke says of the services offered through the local offices. “There are peer groups, support groups, social groups, all kinds of activities that people can participate in.”

For more information about the local branches, call 1-800-266-7516 or 613-544-3078.

Lemke says the local McDonald’s was a great support to their cause, allowing them to be in the restaurant and even providing a free lunch to the volunteers.
