GNES offering free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in exchange for older model alarms in January

During the month of January, Greater Napanee Fire Department will be giving away free smoke and carbon monoxide combination alarms to residents of Greater Napanee.

To receive an alarm residents stop by one of Greater Napanee’s stations with a battery-operated smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old for exchange. Proof of residency in Greater Napanee will be required and a maximum of two alarms will be allowed for each household.

By law, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are required to be replaced within the time frame indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions. Most manufacturers have a replacement date of every 10 years. Over time, the sensors in alarms get less sensitive in detecting smoke and CO.

The new alarms have a 10-year sealed battery, which only requires monthly testing.

Residents can come by Greater Napanee Fire Department stations at the following times:

66 Advance Avenue Napanee – Jan. 2 – 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

2956 South Shore Road Napanee – Saturday Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3264 County Road 41 Roblin – Saturday Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
