Citing the rising costs of materials coupled with supply shortages, Doornekamp Construction Ltd. has put a pause on all work on their Gibbard District condominium project in Napanee.

All is quiet at the site as the company attempts to get the project back on budget.

“The Gibbard District project (environmental site clean-up, demolition, underground parking and super structure forming) had been moving along well following the challenges of the pandemic and global supply chain,” said Nate Doornekamp, director with Doornekamp Construction Ltd, via email. “With this in mind, like many other construction companies across Canada, Doornekamp Construction Ltd are needing to regroup before moving forward with this development.  With increased material costs and shortages combined with time delay, our cost of construction has increased, therefore the Development Team has paused construction of the project in order to minimize costs while options are being considered to bring the project back on budget.”

“We have already found several expediencies and solutions that will allow us to restart construction in the next couple of months,” added Doornekamp. “The Development Team is committed to finding all possible solutions to complete Building 1 as planned, with Building 2 to follow. We will advise of occupancy dates when available.”

Shovels were first put into the ground for the project in November of 2019 with an original completion date of 2022. Housed on the site of the former Gibbard Furniture Factory, the project is slated to include two buildings featuring 143 residential units, restaurants and shops.
