The Belleville Spirits U16 basketball team captured gold last weekend in Division 1 at the Ontario Cup.
Their roster included players from across Lennox and Addington. Making up the team was: Avery McCoy, Carys Wood, Emery Leveque, Grace Crawford, Hannah Millington, MaKennin Roach, Nyomi Bertrand, Olivia McFaul, Samantha Milne and Syrena Elliot.
Belleville’s first game a heartbreaking one-point loss 43 – 42, to Kingston.
The second game, a scrappy affair with Kitchener Phoenix, saw Spirits just outwork their opponents on every level for a 54 – 43 win. Then it was time for a rematch against a season-long rival. Thunder Bay had beaten Belleville earlier in the season at a tournament. Down one point at the half the Spirit girls rallied to win by 13; 40–27. Pesky Belleville defense showed its reward as the game went on.
Sunday’s gold game put the Spirits up against the Barrie Royals. Down 10–2 early the girls just re-grouped, got it back one play at a time. It was a close game all the way but ended with 41–36 gold victory for Belleville.
