Erinsville’s Maddi Wheeler picked up a goal and an assist at the Canada Winter Games, helping Team Ontario’s women’s hockey team to a fourth place finish in Red Deer, Alta.
Ontario came up just short of a medal, losing 5-4 to British Columbia in Saturday’s bronze medal game.
Wheeler picked up both her points in Ontario’s 5-2 quarter-final win against Saskatchewan. The 16-year-old NDSS student earned an assist on Lauren Cote’s first period goal and then put Ontario up 2-0 with an early power-play strike in the second period.
Ontario would be shutout 1-0 in the semifinals against Quebec, relegating them to the bronze medal game against B.C.
The host Alberta team would go on to top Quebec 2-1 in the gold medal game.
