Selby’s Lennox Community Theatre will close out the 2017-2018 season with a thriller, Wait Until Dark, debuting on June 8.
Directed by Maureen McDonald, the play was written by Frederick Knott and later adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.
“A young woman in New York City, in the 1940s, who is blind, finds herself in the middle of a situation where she has two decidedly bad guys after something in her apartment,” explains McDonald. “She is coming between them and the thing that they are after. She has to out wit them.”
Originally written in 1966, it was adapted for the big screen in 1967 with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin in the starring roles. The blockbuster was listed as the 55th on the American Film Industry’s top 100 thriller list and number 10 on Bravo’s Scariest Movie Moments.
A handful of L&A Community Theatre veterans will take the stage for the local production with Tami Montpetit as Susan, Wihse Green as Sam, Marie Hetke as Gloria, Dick Miller as Carlino, David Cossaboom as Mike and Hal Potter as Roat.
McDonald says it has been a great cast to work with and is looking forward to a great run to close out another busy season at the theatre.
The play will also mark a bit of a departure from some of the comedies and dramas that were produced this season.
“We don’t see a lot of thrillers (at the Selby theatre) but I think people are really going to like this,” said McDonald. “It’ll have you on the edge of your seat.”
This won’t be the first time the play has been staged in Selby, though it has been awhile. McDonald says it was well received and thought it would be a good time to bring it back.
The director does caution that the play’s content isn’t suited for young children.
Following their June 8 premier, the show will also run June 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. as well as June 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Regular admission is $18 or $15 for seniors during the Sunday shows. Tickets are available at Gray’s IDA Drug Store or be calling 613-354-3346.
