The power of one – the value of many’ was a very fitting theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week, celebrated April 18 to 24.

The VON Greater Napanee site believe their amazing volunteers are a vital link to the community and are a valued part of their team. More than 100 volunteers provide service to the seniors in the community to help them stay in their homes, where they want to be.

VON Greater Napanee would not be able to provide the services that they successfully accomplish without these dedicated people. Each volunteer is a caring individual who gives freely each and every time they put on their VON name badge. Volunteers deliver meals on wheels, transport clients to medical appointments, prepare and package meals in the VON kitchen, assist with adult day program activities, work the reception desk and participate in all aspects of the congregate dining program. The volunteers brighten the days of VON clients and truly promote the organization’s tagline of “Live Every Day”.

During Volunteer Appreciation Week, and right in the midst of a spring snowfall, VON celebrated quietly but proudly with a ‘Drive Thru Coffee Break’. Keeping a safe distance, wearing masks, and following COVID protocol, volunteers stayed in their vehicles while staff quickly handed them coffee and delicious donuts compliments of McDonalds, as well as a gift bag as a token of appreciation for their service. Donated door prizes were also a surprising treat for a few Volunteers.

“We knew our Volunteer Week event participation numbers would be much lower this year, but we wanted to recognize and thank these individuals in the safest manner possible for their true dedication in helping seniors in this area during these very difficult times,” said Cindy Weese, manager, of home and community care with VON Greater Napanee. “They simply are the best, and I’m so proud to have them as part of the VON team in this region”.
