Vehicle collision leads to hand gun and drug charges in Addington Highlands

Officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged four people after a vehicle collision leads to hand gun and drug charges.

On Jan. 16, shortly after 10 a.m., L&A OPP received a call for a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 7 just east of Kellar Road, in Addington Highlands Township. When police arrived there were four males outside of the vehicle walking around. The vehicle had slid off the road and into a guard rail. The vehicle was damaged and no one was injured in the collision. Police observed a strong odour of cannabis and open alcohol in the motor vehicle as they were talking to the four males. The vehicle was searched and police located alcohol, a loaded hand gun, approximately seven pills of suspected codeine, 5.14 grams of suspected methamphetamines, 80.07 grams of suspected cocaine, and 11.92 grams of suspected fentanyl. The four males were placed under arrest.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged Isaiah Banton, age 23, of Toronto, Ontario, with:

  • Failure to comply with release order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a fire arm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

Clive Ferguson, age 54, of Brampton, was charged with:

  • Failure to comply with undertaking
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a fire arm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Drive motor vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

Also charged was Hamad Shomari, age 30, of Toronto with:

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a fire arm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

Additionally police charged David Jajua, age 32, of Mississauga with:

  • Failure to comply with release order – two counts
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – other drugs
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
  • Unauthorized possession of a weapon
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a fire arm
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – opioid
  • Tampering with a serial number of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to probation order – eight counts

All four were held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on a later date.

“This is another great example of teamwork leading to safer communities,” said L&A OPP Cst. David Yome. “If you see something, say something. Your vigilance matters. If you observe any suspicious activity, please report it immediately to police. Together, we can keep our communities safe.”

-Officers of the Lennox and Addington OPP charged one driver with impaired driving after receiving multiple calls from concerned citizens.

On Jan. 16, shortly before 6 a.m., L&A OPP responded to multiple reports of a possible impaired driver on Hwy 7 eastbound at Kaladar. Police patrolled for the vehicle and located it parked on Hwy 7 between Arden Road and Hughes Road in Central Frontenac Township. There was a male and a female in the vehicle. After talking with police the male driver was arrested for impaired driving and obstruction.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged Rebar Hussein, age 41, of Dundas, On. with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Obstruct peace officer
  • Operation while prohibited – three counts
  • Uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on another date. The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
