Greater Napanee has begun the process of assuming responsibility for Riverside and Riverview cemeteries.

The process began early in May when the Napanee Cemetery Company informed the town they wish to turn over the cemeteries, located at 334 Church St. and 336 Dundas Street W, to the municipality.

In a release, the town stated as a final resting place for many people’s families, the cemeteries possess a deep historical connection to the community and must be given proper care and maintenance. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency however, the transfer process is expected to be a slow one.

To ensure regular and proper attention is given to the Riverside and Riverview cemeteries, the town is seeking volunteers to assist staff with the upkeep of these two cemeteries. Volunteers will be vital in providing the highest standards of preserving the resting places and memorials of the deceased, as well as creating a welcoming, calming environment for the public visiting their loved ones who have passed. A public notice will be released by the town in the coming weeks with further details regarding town-owned cemetery maintenance volunteer opportunities.

More information on cemeteries located within Greater Napanee can be found on the ‘Cemeteries’ page of the town’s website, www.greaternapanee.com.
