Suspect arrested in connection with suspicious object placed outside Napanee business

L&A OPP announced they’ve arrested a suspect in relation to a suspicious object that was found outside a Napanee business back in May.

On May 13 officers of the L&A OPP responded to a report of a suspicious object found in an outdoor garbage can at a local business on Centre Street.  

The OPP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) assisted L&A County OPP and removed the object from the can, safely dismantling it.   

On July 5, L&A County OPP’s Crime Unit, with the assistance of several other specialty units, executed a search warrant at a residence in Belleville in relation to this incident.  

As a result of this investigation, a 22 year-old man from Belleville was arrested and charged with making or possessing an explosive for an unlawful purpose. 

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing and was in the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee on Monday. L&A County OPP crime unit continue to investigate the incident.

The OPP would like to remind the public that if they encounter a suspicious device or hazardous chemicals that they feel may have explosive capabilities, it is always best to not handle or move these objects, but to immediately contact the OPP. Members of the OPP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) are appropriately trained and resourced to ensure public safety by dismantling explosive devices, disposing of abandoned explosives, military ordinance, ammunition and various other hazardous substances.
