Collectors will have the chance to explore Greater Napanee while picking up tiny souvenirs this summer during the town’s ongoing Button Hunt campaign.

Launched last Wednesday, the hunt will see a pair of new buttons released each week at different locations across the township. Each button will feature a unique design relating its location, such as the facade of Old Hay Bay Church or a fire truck for Greater Napanee Emergency Services, which happen to be the first buttons released.

“We’re trying to hit a variety of businesses and historic properties all around town and surrounding Greater Napanee,” explained Kelsey Pearson, a summer student with the Town of Greater Napanee. “We really want to get people to regions of the town that they may not be visiting everyday. Especially during the summer, it’s a great time to explore and really get out of your everyday routine.”

The hunt could have appeal for both tourists and locals alike who may want to complete the challenge of collecting all the buttons.

Each week the town’s social media page will announce the new location and buttons. All buttons will remain at their location throughout the summer, so people can also go back and visit a location if they miss a particular week.

“We have little metal buckets with a Post-It on it that say Button Hunt,” said Ebony Digby, Town of Greater Napanee summer student. “They come in and grab a button and hopefully if you go to Old Hay Bay Church you get the story. When we went we got the whole run down of the place, it was awesome.”

All told there will be 20 buttons introduced throughout the summer, with special event ones planned for the future. Each design was created by Eliza Zatterberg.

“If you get every place that we put out there, there’s a little extravaganza that we’ll have (at 12 Market Square),” said Digby.

If the hunt proves to be popular, it will be extended to a regular feature. The town is also encouraging anyone who takes part to snap a creative photo that shows how they display their buttons, whether it be a sash or in a display case. The photos could be included on the town’s social media pages.

Though the Button Hunt isn’t a competition, it does pair nicely with the town’s ongoing Find the Chairs challenge. Similar to the Button Hunt, the Find the Chairs encourages the town’s social media followers to locate the orange and blue Adirondack chairs that are moved to different locations throughout the town. The more photos they can take of themselves in the chair, the more chances they have to win prizes.
