Stum removal left woodpecker nest-less

A dead tree on Newburgh’s Main Street boasted and hosted a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers.

First the tree was trimmed to a stump but the nest (holes in the trunk) remained. Days later, the stump was removed. While the dead tree was possibly a danger, the stump was no threat.

Pileated Woodpeckers are a magnificent, prehistoric looking bird. They were endangered but are slowly coming back. Removing the stump containing their nest seems like bureaucratic incompetence and explains why these glorious birds are subject to extinction.

Such a shame. Let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again.
