The Township of Stone Mills is taking steps towards a greener and more sustainable future and is seeking residents interest in participating in a FoodCycler pilot program.
An informational presentation about the FoodCycler was brought to the Sept. 18, 2023 council meeting, where council directed staff to seek public interest in participating in a household FoodCycler pilot program. This innovative initiative that aims to address the issue of food waste while promoting environmental consciousness within the community was supported to proceed.
The FoodCycler program, which has gained recognition and success in Dysart et al and Carleton Place, started providing municipal programs in 2020 and is now up to 78 municipalities signed up to participate. Many of these programs were funded in part by a grant from the Impact Canada Food Waste Reduction Challenge.
In order for the Township to participate in this subsidized pilot program, FoodCycle Science is conducting a pre-registration survey seeking if there is substantial public interest to run the Pilot Program. Residents interested must be willing to purchase a FoodCycler unit at a cost of $150 to $300, track the number of cycles over an 12-week period and complete a survey at the end of the 12-week period.
