Stone Mills Nutty Challenge drumming up peanut butter donations for local food banks

Following up on some work they did together last year for Christmas, Diane Giberson (Sutton Group Masters Realty) from Yarker and James Clarey (owner of Amped Up Electric) from Tamworth decided that a challenge to raise food for the food banks was necessary this year.

The result is the Stone Mills Nutty Challenge. The goal is to collect as many donations of peanut butter jars as possible for the Napanee Salvation Army and New Legacy Centre, now through Dec. 17.

“I literally gasped when I read your idea, since peanut butter is a food bank staple that we are routinely purchasing. What a great idea,” Abby Mills, director of community ministries for the Napanee Salvation Army said in response to the challenge. “Peanut butter is something that goes out in every food box, so having a lot on hand would definitely be a good thing.”

Word is ‘spreading’ fast around Stone Mills and as of the week of Nov. 27 over 400 jars have been collected with many more expected by the deadline of Dec. 17. Each village within Stone Mills is getting into the act and posting their nutty photos on the Stone Mills Marketplace Facebook group and egging each other on. Not only is each community competing for the crown of ‘The Nuttiest Town’, business – to – business challenges are also in the mix and as of late, the fire halls are challenging each other.

Donations will be divided between the Napanee Salvation Army and the New Legacy Centre in Tamworth. Anyone wishing to get nutty with the rest of them can drop off their jars at any of these locations: Yarker Lucky Dollar (Yarker), 14 Hilltop Drive, Enterprise (in the black box), A1 Corner Store, Tamworth Hardware, S’Cooper’s Pizzeria (Tamworth), McCormick’s, 122 Heritage Drive (Camden East), Abrams Bakery, Newburgh Pharmacy, Newburgh Clinic (Newburgh), Lakeview Tavern, Oops a Daisy Flower Farm and Florist (Erinsville), R. Baker and Sons Exteriors Inc., 443 Huffman Road basement door (Moscow), Stone Mills Township office (Centreville).

Those that take a picture of themselves delivering the jars to the drop-off location and post it to Stone Mills Marketplace FB group and be entered in a draw for a chance to win a large pizza.
