Staff picks for August

Coles’ Notes

The staff of the County of L&A Libraries are avid readers and always eager to share their favourite books. Here we bring you a list of some of the reads we’ve recently enjoyed. This month you’ll find a multicultural romance, a dark thriller, a richly-detailed historical novel, and travelogue that takes the reader on a journey all across Canada.

Julie suggests Park Bagger: Adventures in Canada’s National Parks by Marlis Butcher

“Marlis Butcher is a park bagger, a person that sets out to visit every one of Canada’s 48 National Parks. This is an amazing feat considering the remoteness of some of the locations.  This is a perfect read for armchair travellers or might even prove as inspiration to some to get out and explore the beauty of Canada (once restrictions ease). It will truly make you appreciate the great country we live in.”

Patricia suggests Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron

“Reena and Nadim meet on the stairs of their apartment building and there is an instant attraction. The pair become friends and drunkenly submit an entry to an online cooking competition. Little do they know that to compete they must be a couple. To stay in the competition Reena and Nadim decide to fake a relationship and their chemistry is obvious to viewers who keep voting for the couple. As they progress in the competition, the lines start to blur as their friendship become more. But soon the couple realize that their families have been meddling, lies have been told, and everything falls apart. Can true love overcome?”

Kristin suggests The Royal Governess by Wendy Holden

“This story follows the life of Marion Crawford, a very modern, confident, and independent woman for her time. After finishing teacher’s college in 1932, her plans were to bring access to education to the poorest of slums and neighborhoods. However, through some unexpected events and connections, she secures the position of a lifetime as a governess to their Royal Highnesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose! The author has created one of the most informative and detailed historical fiction novels I have ever read, and it is certainly a must-read for royal watchers. Months of research and information taken from controversial articles written by the real-life Marion Crawford went into creating this one of a kind novel about how a common woman was hired to both educate and raise Queen Elizabeth II.”

Marg suggests The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker

The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker is a dark, disturbing, and compulsively readable psychological thriller. The protagonist of this gritty, chilling novel is eight –year-old Chrissy. The story starts with her stating that she just killed a boy and the feeling made her belly fizz like soda pop. This book is definitely not for everyone but delving into the mind of this troubled, vicious little girl and discovering her back story of neglect and abuse makes for an unforgettable read.”

Jennifer suggests Bright and Dangerous Objects by Anneliese Mackintosh

Bright and Dangerous Objects is the story of Solvig, a diver in the oil industry who spends months at a time submerged in a tight ship with mostly men. She loves her job, loves her long-term boyfriend, loves her life — but she wants more. When she reads about a contest offering her the opportunity of a lifetime, Solvig must decide what she truly wants: to start a family or to reach for the stars (pun intended), and apply for a position as one of the first settlers on Mars.
