St. Pat’s wins ALCDB’s co-ed volleyball championship

Editor’s note: the following was written by the Grade 4 to 8 student reporters at St. Patrick’s Catholic School.

On Nov. 10 the junior co-ed volleyball team from St. Patrick Catholic School in Erinsville won the Algonquin-Lakeshore Catholic District School Board’s  junior co-ed volleyball tournament that was played at Queen’s West Campus.

They played a total of 14 games and only lost three.

The tournament consisted of teams from Kingston (Lakeshore, Martello, and Mulberry Waldorf – all private schools), Wolfe Island (Sacred Heart C.S.), and Sharbot Lake (St. James Major C.S.).

The student-athletes from St. Pat’s prepared for over a month practising such skills as volleying, bumping, and serving.

“I think we served the ball really well but more importantly, I think we stayed positive throughout the tournament and played great as a team,” said Mya Slack, a Grade 5 student.  The last time St. Pat’s won a tournament at the school board level was in 2011.

Kaleb Walker-Maleska, a Grade 6, said, “I knew we had a good chance at winning because our team had the right attitude and mindset going into the tournament and we practised a lot.

“As our captain, I’m really proud of my team and coaches. We knew it was important to have fun but as we won the first few games, we knew that we had an opportunity to win and that opportunity does not always come often.”
