Spring forward: GNFD remind residents to check smoke alarm batteries

Greater Napanee Fire Department (GNFD) would like to remind residents that Daylight Saving Time starts at 2 a.m. on  March 10, so get ready to “spring ahead” and change your clocks and change your batteries.

In addition, GNFD recommends that you take some additional simple steps to make sure the smoke

and carbon monoxide alarms in your home are maintained and working properly. These steps are as

follows:

  • -Install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
  • -Install a carbon monoxide alarm outside of each sleeping area if your home has a fuelburning appliance, an attached garage, or a fireplace.
  • -Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
  • -Make sure everyone in your household understands the sound of the smoke and carbonmonoxide alarms and knows how to respond.
  • -If an alarm “chirps,” warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away with one thatis recommended by the manufacturer.
  • -It is law that smoke and carbon alarms be replaced within the time frame as per themanufacturer’s instructions (maximum 10 years).
  • -When replacing an alarm, make sure it meets current standards and you use an alarm thatprovides the same or better protection.
  • -Have an escape plan that has two ways out of every room.

We believe tragedies caused by fires can be reduced by reminding our friends, family, neighbors to do the same.  So please take this simple step to make your home safe.
