Southview Public School Grade 5 students joined visitors to Morningstar Mission for a hot meal on Tuesday.

The class brought with them a $955 cheque for the Mission, which they raised through a student-led bake sale of hot chocolate and treats. What started out as a class project developed into a major fundraising imitative undertaken by the students, raising nearly $1,000.

The money will go towards the Mission’s hot meal program, which provides nourishing meals for anyone in the community in the basement of their 59 Water St. location. The Mission offers hot lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. Dinners are served Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting at 4 p.m. The Mission also provides take home food baskets for those in need.

Students Cal Wilson and Rihanna Cowan volunteered to help dish out the meal along the serving line, serving both their classmates and members of the community.

Along with delivering the money, the visit also gave the students an opportunity to meet some of the people who visit the Mission for a warm meal. By talking with the guests, it was a chance to erase some of the stigma that is sometimes attached to those who visit the Mission. The students also had the chance to learn more about what the Mission does as well as learn of volunteer opportunities for those that were interested.
