Routine traffic stop leads to firearm charges

Police recovered a prohibited loaded firearm and ammunition after a routine traffic stop on hWY 401 in Napanee.

Just before midnight on Jan. 29, members of the Lennox & Addington OPP were conducting traffic enforcement on Hwy 401 in the Town of Greater Napanee when they observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

A traffic stop of the vehicle was initiated and, through subsequent investigation, one occupant of the vehicle was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. All the vehicle occupants were placed under arrest and transported to the L&A County detachment where the vehicle driver was later released unconditionally.

As a result of the investigation L&A County OPP has charged:

A 20 year-old Kingston resident has been charged with:

  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a firearm obtained by crime
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
  • Two counts of possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition oder

As well, a 19 year-old Scarborough resident has been charged with:

  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a firearm obtained by crime
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Two counts of possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose

Both accused people are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee at a later date.
