Police remind motorists not to leave children, pets in parked cars this summer

Summer is officially underway and with it comes the dangers of scorching hot weather and vehicles.

Members of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding the public that parked cars trap heat quickly.
Even on a relatively mild day, temperatures in parked cars can become dangerous in a matter of minutes. Opening or lowering the windows does little or nothing to protect pets or children inside.

When running errands police suggest people should leave their pets at home where they will be cool and comfortable.  Children in their care should accompany them for errands, as they should never leave a child unattended anywhere, especially in a hot car.

Citizens are encouraged to Call 911 immediately if they see occupants in a vehicle that may be in distress. If a child is left unattended the Child and Family Services Act comes into action. Police work jointly with Family and Children’s Services and the Provincial Animal Welfare Service for such cases.
