Missing their offense in their first game earlier Saturday morning, the Napanee Peewee Express’ bats showed up in spades for their second contest to even their record at 1-1 after Day 1 at Nationals in Saskatoon, SK.

Their bats held in check in a 4-3 loss to the Wilmot Thunder earlier on Saturday, Napanee pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits to defeat Saskatchewan’s Shellbrook Rangers in their afternoon game.

Express third baseman Ty Kemp had four hits, including a triple and a double, while driving in three. Pitcher Ethan Tombs launched a home run and drove in three as part of a 3-for-5 day game at the plate. Tombs struck out eight Rangers, sharing pitching duties with Gavin Brooks and Ethan Sutcliffe.

Napanee opened the tournament against the Thunder, falling behind 2-0 after the first. They battled back with two in the fourth only to see the Thunder respond with two in their half of the inning. Napanee added one in the sixth but fell short in the 4-3 loss.

Jack Madden drove in a pair of runs from Napanee, who are playing as Ontario’s top seed, while Kemp had one RBI.

Napanee returns to action tomorrow at noon when they face off against the Prairie Pride. At 5 p.m. they’ll take on BC’s Terrace Grizzlies.

Round robin play will continue through Monday with the playoffs beginning on Tuesday, with the finals on Wednesday.
