Napanee’s Peewee BB Crunch won the Gold medal at the Barrie Sharkfest Tournament this past weekend with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over the South Huron Sabres in the finals.

Keyra Herrington earned the shutout for Napanee, completing her perfect weekend, not allowing a goal in all three games she played.

The game was a back and forth game with chances at both ends of the ice. After three periods solved nothing, the game moved to a five minute, 4-on-4 overtime.

The Crunch controlled the play from the puck drop and hemmed the Sabres in their zone. Charley Weir poked a puck loose from the Sabres defense and fired a shot that the goalie made a nice save on. Hailey Lay charged the net and absolutely hammered the puck into the back of the net setting off the celebration.

The finals victory capped off an undefeated weekend for the Crunch.

Napanee started off their weekend with a 3-0 win over the Mississauga Chiefs on Friday. Diana Wharton earned the shutout while Alaina Holmes, Kristen Sutton and Weir each had a goal. Weir and Lay also picked up assists in the tournament opening win.

Game 2 was a 1-0 win over the North Simcoe Capitals. Herrington stopped a couple of breakaways early en route to her first of three tournament shutouts. Sutton scored the game winner with assists from Weir and Kaya Richardson.

Next the Crunch took on the host Barrie Sharks, skating to a 2-1 victory.

Wharton was solid in goal for the win while Claire McConnell scored both goals with assists from Ava de Almeida, Nicole Geenevasen (two) and Brooklyn Alaver.

This put the Crunch in as the top seed heading into the quarter-finals, where they beat the Clearview Ice Kats, 2-0.

Herrington turned aside every shot for the shutout with goals from Sutton and Weir.

In the semifinals they again matched up with the hosts, besting them 3-2 in overtime. The Sharks took the lead early in the first period but the Crunch kept pushing and tied it up with 46 seconds left in the period. Sutton scored assisted by Alaina Holmes. Sutton added her second goal of the game in the second period, assisted by Weir and Chloe Davey.  The Sharks tied it back up late in the third period to force the overtime.

It didn’t last long however as it took just 56 seconds for Sutton to complete her hat trick, assisted by Weir and McConnell, ending the host team’s hopes for a medal and setting the Crunch up for their heart-pounding 1-0 victory in the finals.

For her perseverance and dedication to her teammates, Sutton earned the Avery Andrew award.
