OPP say speeding driver causes accident on 401, assaults police while being taken into custody

On Saturday July 4 at approximately 2:30 p.m. officers of the Lennox and Addington OPP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Hwy 401 westbound west of the Shannonville exit.

A Grey Volkswagen Jetta was travelling westbound at a high rate of speed and drove into the back of a vehicle that was also traveling westbound.

The driver of the Jetta lost control and came to rest against the concrete median.  The driver exited the vehicle before it caught fire.  The highway was closed for a short period of time while Belleville Fire Department distinguished the fire. No one was injured in the collision and the driver of the Jetta was arrested and transported to L&A County OPP detachment for processing.

As a result of the investigation L&A County OPP have charged a 34-year-old man of Pickering with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand;
  • Resisting police
  • Assaulting a police officer
  • Utter Threat to cause harm

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee on Sept. 8. The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
