Abstract to weaving and everything in between will be on display in Newburgh this Saturday during the 13th annual Art Among the Ruins art show.
David Anderson and Viola Kalinowski will once again invite the public onto the grounds of their historic mill property where over 70 artists will showcase artwork that’s for sale.
As always the lineup will feature a mix of returnees and new artists who will set up shop among the scenic gardens while the Napanee River babbles nearby.
A firmly established event with plenty of followers, there’s never any shortage of artists looking to showcase their work.
“We have a little selection committee that goes through all (the artists),” explains Anderson, who will also be showing his work during the show. “There’s not room for everybody.”
Spaces fill up as quickly as the first week of January for the June event.
“I had to find extra spots this year because we’ve got over 70 artists this year,” said Anderson. “It meant scrambling and shoeing them in, but it should be comfortable just the same.”
A large number of interested artists allows organizers to be selective in who they include in the show, allowing them to represent a wide variety of mediums.
“Out of that 70 there might be seven or eight that are painters, but we find most of them aren’t the same kind of presentation,” said Anderson. “You might have abstract, you might have fine detail, you might have someone that specializes in animals or landscapes. When I’m laying out who is going where, I’m trying to always be aware of that so we don’t have two painters side by side.”
Also among the mediums that will be showcased will be knitting, clay, photography, jewellery, fabric, pottery, fused glass, twig furniture and porcelain, among others. A handful of artists will also be holding demonstrations throughout the day as well.
Last year over 2,500 guests attended the event and with clear skies forecasted for the weekend, another large crowd is expected to peruse the artwork. In previous years they’ve come from far and wide, including Niagara-on-the-Lake, Montreal, Ottawa and New York State.
The Kitchen Gypsies and Jazz On Colborne will be providing soft background music throughout the day while the Newburgh Lion’s will be on hand to host a fundraising barbecue.
As with previous years, during the event Earl Street will be transformed into a one-way street.
The event, which is free admission, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The mill is located at 27 Earl Street.
