Despite a school year cut short in mid March due to COVID-19, the NDSS Golden Hawks still had plenty of athletic success to celebrate in 2019-20.

Unable to gather for their traditional year-end banquet, the school’s athletic department announced this year’s award recipients virtually.

The CS Froud Award, presented to the male and female Grade 12 outstanding athletes of the year, went to Amber Weese and Dean Taylor.

The DE Thompson/Andy Egan Award, presented to the male and female Grade 9 athletes of the year, went to Lila Pringle and Spencer Cranley, respectively.

Matt Ruttan and Maddy Cronkwright were named NDSS’ Heart Award winners, presented to a male and female student who contributed to the whole athletic program throughout the year, displaying dedication, leadership and athletic spirit which has improved the overall nature of athletics at the school.

Mack Grosvenor and Taylor Thompson earned the Eric Bartlett Award, presented to the male and female athlete who best exemplify an ongoing involvement in Physical Education at NDSS, combined with the maintenance of a high level of personal fitness and athletic excellence in their sports involvement (varsity and classroom).

The Athletic Council Award winners were Cronkwright and Megan Morrow.

Golden Hawks girls’ hockey captain Maddi Wheeler earned an Excellence in Athletics award while swimmer Owen Googe was named an Outstanding Individual Athlete, winning EOSSAA gold in the 100 m breaststroke, 100 m IM and 200 m IM.

Reid Lambert was named the Terry Foley MVP of the boys’ hockey team while Connor Smith was named the winner of the Jeff Hill Memorial Award.

NDSS saw four teams reach at least the KASSAA finals-ultimate Frisbee, boys’ hockey, girls’ hockey and boys’ curling.

The school was just preparing to begin its spring season when schools across the province were closed.
