Emma Chatterton was reluctant to take to the tennis court on her own, but it turns out she did just fine as a solo act.
She wound up placing second at the KASSAA tennis singles championship on May 16 in Kingston, which qualified her as the lone NDSS Golden Hawk to take part in EOSSAA. She won her first match 6-0 before falling 6-1 in her second, ending her bid for an OFSAA appearance. All in all it was a strong showing for the Grade 11 who considered herself a stronger player in doubles than in singles.
“I was kind of shocked,” said Chatterton. “I didn’t think I was going to do good. (Hawks tennis coaches Matt) Compeau and (Aron) Wilson put me in as single but I wanted to play with someone but there was too many people in the category. So they put me in as a single. I got further than I thought I was going to.”
Tennis has long been a passion for Chatterton, who took up the sport at a young age by practicing with her father. She continued to play into teens before her breakout season this spring.
She’s eligible to return for another KASSAA season next year. Her EOSSAA experience could prove beneficial as she look to build on her success of this year.
