The Lennox & Addington Museum and Archives is having its Museum Kids Saturday event on Feb. 1st with “Family Portraits for Family Day” at the museum.
This free event is geared to promote arts and culture to kids in the community and is the first event of the Museum Kids series for the 2020 season. These events will be hosted on the first Sat. of the month from Feb.-May and Oct.-Dec.
“It is truly wonderful how many families are showing up and taking part in this wonderful event at the museum,” expressed Amber Meyer, program coordinator, museum and archives with Lennox & Addington County. “Not only do these events provide opportunities for families to spend time together learning a new skill, but they’re also spending time walking through the museum and enjoying our local history.”
To celebrate Family Day kids will be learning a unique form of painting through acrylic art and how to use it to create texture and depth to their family portrait painting. The concern for perfect lines, exact detail and need for realism is removed leaving budding artists to create their own eye for art.
Family portraits can be of any member of their family from their siblings, parents, grandparents or even a favourite family pet.
Helen Kosmopoulos, a local artist and first time host of the program at the museum, was asked to host this event and share her love of painting.
“I asked Helen Kosmopoulos to host this event and share her love of painting as she provides a very unique perspective and creates engaging art viewers of all ages enjoy,” Meyer told The Beaver. “We look to provide opportunities for artists we haven’t used for events before to always be presenting something new for our guests. Although we do occasionally use the same artist, they present new workshops and ideas.”
As always for Museum Kids, admission is free.
New this year – due to the large number of visitors participating in the last few events, staff are requesting for parents/guardians to please RSVP online for one of the two sessions happening at 10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
“Seeing familiar faces, and welcoming new ones to the museum, is a wonderful experience for me,” Meyer said. “It means that Lennox and Addington County residents and beyond are receptive to our programs and look forward to making memories within our walls. A truly rewarding component of my job here at the museum and archives.”
