Lennox and Addington OPP are reminding motorists to be aware of the pedestrian crossover just before Southview Public School.

Located near the Napanee Golf and Country Club entrance at the junction of James Street and County Rd 8, the crossover features yellow flashing beacons that are activated through a pushbutton on either side of the road.

Drivers and cyclists must come to a complete stop when the lights are flashing and all pedestrians must reach the other side of the curb before a vehicle can start moving. Failure to do so is not only dangerous, but can result in a fine of $300-$1,000 and drivers may also face four demerit points upon conviction.

Lennox and Addington OPP say they have received some complaints from parents in regards to motorists not obeying the law regarding the crossover. Portable message boards have been set up north and south of the crossing advising drivers to stop for the flashing lights. Southview Public School will also be providing information to students to remind them of how to safely cross the road. The location will continue to be monitored by traffic enforcement officers.
