Canada’s women’s rugby sevens team struggled to get anything going against France tonight, losing 31-0 to close out pool play at the Tokyo Olympics.

France came out strong, building a 12-0 lead in the first. A head’s up play by Napanee’s Britt Benn prevented a third try in the first as she booted the ball from behind Canada’s own try line just as a pair of France players were closing in for a tackle.

Any hope of a comeback was dashed early in the second when Canada was able to get within 20 yards of a try but were held up by a strong France defensive unit. Canada was unable to mount much of an offensive threat from that point.

Canada finishes pool play with a 1-2 record with a -12 point differential. They’ll need some help if they’re to advance to the quarter-finals. Canada sits third in their pool and could advance if they finish as one of the top two teams to finish third in their pool. The top two teams from each pool advance to the playoffs as well as two of the top third place teams.

Canada will await the completion of the rest of pool play to learn their fate.
