Library staffers offer September picks

Coles Notes

The staff of the County of L&A Libraries are avid readers and always eager to share their favourite books. Here we bring you a list of some of the reads we’ve enjoyed this month. We have a broad array of reading tastes, so you’ll find mysteries, children’s lit, fantasy and even an end-of-summer beach read. Hopefully you’ll find something that piques your interest!

Erin suggests The Perfect Couple by Elin Hildebrand

If you’ve ever planned a wedding or even attended one, you know how intense they can be. In this summer read, set in Nantucket, the perfect wedding is being planned for one of the islands’ wealthiest families.

On the morning of the wedding, everyone is just waking up when a horrible discovery occurs. The body of the maid of honour is found lying lifeless on the beach. Who could have done this to her? Was it an accident or something more malicious? Even the local police officer feels unsure as to what might have happened.

Everyone seems to have something to hide and in turn makes everyone a suspect.  This intriguing murder mystery will have you guessing right from the beginning and find a reason to accuse everyone involved. For lovers of beach reads with a twist, this book is for you.

Julie suggests Warlight by Richard Wagamese

Starlight is Richard Wagamese’s unfinished novel that he was writing when he passed away.  In a note at the end, the publisher tries to wrap up the story based on Wagamese’s notes and conversations.

The book tells the tale of a mother and daughter on the run from an abusive relationship and a chance meeting with Frankie Starlight who teaches them to trust again.  This book has his common themes of forgiveness and being at one with nature.  Despite the abrupt ending, it proves that he was one of Canada’s best storytellers and he will be greatly missed.

Marg suggests The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson

The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson is a beautifully illustrated children’s book recently mentioned to me by one of our young readers.

Andree suggests Into the Black Nowhere by Meg Gardiner

Into the Black Nowhere by Meg Gardiner offers a gripping, terrifying look into the mind of a serial killer. Strong characters and several twists and turns will keep you engaged in this page-turner until you reach the compelling finish. Be warned: this binge-worthy thriller will keep you up all night if you are not careful!

Kristin suggests The Beauty of Darkness by Mary E. Pearson

In The Beauty of Darkness, Mary E. Pearson has given us a thrilling conclusion to her bestselling Remnant Chronicles! I have been in love with this series and the unforgettable characters found within ever since I read the first book.

This masterfully created fantasy world is great for both teens and adults alike. If you are looking to escape into a truly unique world, meet some fierce characters and enjoy stories with a bit of romance mixed in then this is the perfect choice for you!

The combination of action, romance and suspense that Mary. E. Pearson has weaved into this series is one of the best I have ever encountered. You will be gripping every book especially this final one tightly right from the nerve-wracking start all the way to the heart stopping and tear-jerking conclusion!

Karen S. suggests The Best Beach Ever by Wendy Wax

The Best Beach Ever by Wendy Wax is a descriptive, engaging book that will transport you to southern Florida and make you feel as though you were right there with the cast of strong women helping each other through life.  It’s number six in the Ten Beach Road series, but has enough back story to be read as a stand-alone.

You can reserve these titles from your branch of the County of Lennox & Addington Libraries or online at www.countylibrary.ca.

It is based on the true story of an experiment suggested by a reporter from a Washington D.C. newspaper that has Joshua Bell, world renowned concert violinist, performing an unadvertised free concert in a subway station dressed as a street performer in 2007.

How many people would actually stop and listen? Surprisingly few as it turns out although tickets to his sold-out concerts including those at Carnegie Hall and concerts all over the world sell for over $100 each.

Our young protagonist in the story, Dylan, noticed the beautiful music being played and urged his mother to stop but she was in too much of a hurry as were the hundreds of others that didn’t stop that January morning. Dylan reminds us that some days we should just stop, look and listen to the beauty that surrounds us.
