LDSB mental health experts offer advice for talking to youth about COVID-19

Beaver Staff

In an effort to help parents and guardians talk to kids about the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Limestone District School Board’s mental health team has assembled some general guidelines for families.

With ongoing reports flooding social media, kids may appear anxious, worried about themselves and family, preoccupied with illness, have a need for reassurance and a range of physical complaints such as headaches or stomaches.

Parents and family members can help to ease the situation. Factual information will be updated at www.kflaph.ca/en/healthy-living/novel-coronavirus.aspx.

Experts recommend when talking with children and youth about the situation to remain calm and reassuring, make time to talk, reduce the amount of screen time relating to COVID-19 and teach children everyday actions to reduce the spread of germs.

A full list of frequently asked questions is available at the board’s website at www.Limestone.On.Ca.

Addictions, Mental Health Services Kingston Frontenac and Lennox and Addington will remain open. Kids Help Phone staff are also available to speak with youths who are feeling anxious through the COVID-19 situation.
