Kingston firm boosts barn build at Sandy Pines

Officials at the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre are hoping to raise money to rebuild this barn, destroyed by fire in January, and incorporate a new aquatic centre for rescued waterbirds.

With its contractor on indefinite leave, a week ago it was looking like the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre wouldn’t see its barn and aquatic centre rebuilt before winter — but things have changed recently.

After spreading word of the delay in completing the rebuild of a barn destroyed by fire last January, support came flooding in to the Napanee facility. Exterior work was completed but the barn was not finished.

Associate director Leah Birmingham has confirmed that Kingston contractor Graham Construction has stepped forward to ensure the project is completed before the snow flies. Graham and its trade partners will provide all necessary construction and project management, said its senior project manager Heidi Shacklady.

“As we continue through the construction on this exciting project, we feel it is time to give back to our local community,” she said in a release.

Contractors or volunteers willing to help Graham with the project can contact Shacklady at 613-329-0921 or at heids@graham.ca. The TransCanada Napanee Generating Station has already offered its assistance.

Birmingham also said that in the past week, over $30,000 has been raised through the #beforethesnowflies fundraising campaign.

The centre hopes to use the barn this winter to keep displaced animals out of the cold conditions.
