Hectic day for Napanee OPP with 22 collisions; driver charged twice with speeding within a span of minutes

It’s been a busy 24-hour stretch for the Napanee OPP, as officers have responded to 22 motor vehicle collisions in that frame.

On Hwy 401 this morning there were four tractor trailers either in the ditch or obstructing the highway, all within a span of a couple hours.

The highway was closed east bound at Hwy 49 in Tyendinaga to allow the OPP to remove a tractor trailer blocking Hwy 401. At the same time there was a tractor trailer in the ditch on Hwy 401 east of Hwy 49, a tractor trailer in the ditch at Salmon River and a fourth tractor trailer east of that.

This morning immediately after Hwy 401 was reopened the OPP pulled over a female driver from Toronto doing 137 km/h in the posted 100 km/h zone. After the traffic stop the woman was stopped for a second time within minutes doing 135 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone. The Napanee OPP remind drivers that speeding in bad weather can result in a careless driving charge for drivers which can carry a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points. Speeding is the number one cause of fatalities on the highway.

In 2017 officers with the Napanee Detachment of the OPP laid a total of 8,840 tickets on local roadways including Hwy 401.

The OPP reminds drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles especially during inclement weather.
