Greater Napanee to host Earth day cleanup, Loyalist to host e-waste drop off April 20

Greater Napanee residents looking to do some community clean up for Earth Day can pick up bags from the town’s municipal offices at 99-A Advance.

They’ll be available through April 19, while supplies last, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Community-minded individuals can then spread out throughout the town, gathering up any litter that has found its way onto the sides of roads and into green spaces to help the town to look its best.

All collected waste must be out on the shoulder of the road no later than 7 a.m. on April 22. Town staff will pick-up the waste throughout that week.

Contact Bethany Chadwick at 613-776-1127 and complete the Earth Day Clean Up Registration Form under the festivals and events tab of www.GreaterNapanee.ca.

Loyalist Township will mark the occasion with an electronic waste, battery and textile recycling drive on April 20 at the Amherstview Fire Hall, 363 Amherst Drive, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is among the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide, containing hazardous materials that can harm the environment and human health if not disposed of correctly.

This year, Loyalist Township has partnered with Diabetes Canada to also collect textiles as the average person throws away 37 kg of textiles per year, the majority of which could be reused or repurposed, but instead, ends up in landfills. Textiles can include clothing, curtains, towels, blankets, sheets, and footwear. Textile donations will be collected by Diabetes Canada at the end of the collection event, with textile net proceeds supporting diabetes research, D-camps and more.

Residents can swing by the Amherstview Fire Station anytime during the event, and drive to the back of the parking lot where Township staff will be waiting to help collect recyclable items.

Earth Day is observed every April 22 and is aimed at showing appreciation for the environment. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics, with the goal of challenging people to reduce their plastic usage 60 per cent by 2040 with the ultimate objective to build a plastic-free future.
