Greater Napanee Soccer Club is hopeful of kicking off its season June 14, returning to the pitch after a full year absence.

Based on provincial guidelines, club president Billy Camperlino is optimistic the season will begin in a little over two weeks.

“If it stays the same way we will start the season on (June 14), however the first two-three weeks will be practice only because that’s what we would be allowed to do if things remain the way that they’ve planned it,” said Camperlino. “After that it will be games.”

For those yet to sign up, online registration is available through the Town of Greater Napanee’s page at https://app.bookking.ca/greaternapaneepub/courses/index.asp until June 2.

The club is hopeful of having one final in-person registration on either June 5 or 8. Once finalized the date will be announced on the club’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram page.

All age groups save for the U14 and U18 will play all their games in Napanee. The two oldest groups will split their season between Napanee and Kingston, alternating every other week.

Camperlino says they will have smaller teams than previous years in order to keep with provincial guidelines. There is however still space remaining for all age groups.

There is also high demand for volunteers to serve as coaches and assistant coaches. Those that are interested will have the opportunity to take part in a drive-through coaching clinic just before the season begins.

Despite the late start, Camperlino says they should be able to get 11 or 12 games in, which is about what they would play in a typical season. As of right now there is no year-end festival planned, but the club remains open to planning one at the last minute if the province opens more fully.

“We’re very excited and looking forward to run the season,” said Camperlino. “We will have to be creative.”
