A 90-year-old Deseronto man was subject to a new scam call for the area, scammers claiming to be from Enbridge Gas.

The scammers will claim they need to come to a person’s house and inspect the furnace.

Linda Roberts, whose father received the scam call, talked with The Beaver about what happened after her father received the call.

“I have a friend who used to be in the trade and he told me right away, he said ‘that is a scam’,” Roberts expressed. “He said, ‘there is no way we would ever call somebody unless they called us purposefully to come in and do an inspection’. I tried to get a hold of Enbridge and I couldn’t, but my father managed to call Enbridge Gas and they told him, do not let them in, that is definitely a scam.”

The OPP were made aware of the scam call.

“When my father had talked to the scammers, they had made arrangements to come to the house the next afternoon,” said Roberts. “I phoned the OPP and made them aware of this new scam and fortunately the police officers told me to tell my father not to be home, so he got out.”

The reason the scam may sound real to some people is Enbridge Gas took over for Union in the Deseronto area the first of June. People need to be aware and remember that Enbridge Gas will not call them unless they have previously called them. If anyone receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from Enbridge Gas saying they need to come in to inspect your furnace, to hang up the call.
