Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of County Road 1 West (also known as Belleville Road) and County Road 10 (also known as Deseronto Road) is expected to begin next week.

R.W. Tomlinson Limited has been contracted by the County of Lennox & Addington and the Township of Tyendinaga to construct the roundabout, with work scheduled to be completed by August of this year.

The work area is within 200m of the intersection on all approaches except to the north where the work area extends approximately 600m north towards Hwy 401. To facilitate the work, temporary lane closures will be required and some traffic delays can be expected. Flag persons will control lane closures.

The push to turn the intersection into a roundabout, which features stop signs on the north and south side of the Deseronto Road side of the intersection, has been ongoing for several years. Cars travelling along County Road One West are not required to stop but it’s become an all too common occurrence for drivers on the north or south side to treat it as if it were a four way stop. Despite studies by the OPP, there’s never been a definitive answer as to why it has become such a dangerous crossing. The intersection has been the site of several collisions over the years, many of them serious as the speed limit for the road is 80 km.

Funding for the project is a combined effort between L&A County, Hastings County, the Town of Greater Napanee and Tyendinaga Township.
