Green leaves have begun to poke through the soil at the Town of Greater Napanee Community Garden, located at 517 County Road 8.
Volunteers have been diligently tending to the land, which was once again donated by Karen and Gord Schermerhorn, all while practicing physical distancing.
All the vegetables grown in the garden will be donated to the Napanee Salvation Army Food Bank. Even in last year’s drought conditions, the garden still produced hundreds of bushels of food for those in need.
Getting the garden ready this year while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols required a bit of re-organizing, but the group of a dozen or so volunteers were able to make it work.
“We usually just come out in a day and do some guerilla gardening,” said Susan Withers, one of the group’s volunteers. “I broke everybody up into teams so that one team comes every day of the week.”
Financial support for the garden has been provided by the Napanee Lioness Club, the Napanee Horticultural Society and Shirley Rayer-one of the garden volunteers, who raised $500 through a plant sale.
Water tanks located beside the garden are filled regularly by Greater Napanee Emergency Services’ fire fighters.
