Before putting a trowel to the ground, green thumbs can talk to experts at Napanee’s Communities In Bloom Garden Expo, April 6 at the SPC.

The popular event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring everything to get ready for the planting season.

“We’re going to have over 40 local nature and garden inspired vendors and exhibitors, which would include non-profit groups,” said Shannon Baker of CIB Napanee. “We have master gardeners on hand to answer questions, the Bath Gardening Club can also help out people who have questions. We’re hoping to have floral displays, door draws. We’re going to have four different speakers.”

This year’s speakers will cover caring for succulents, carbon off-setting tree planting, drought resistant rain gardens and native plants.

Admission is $3 and includes the chance to win door prizes.

For those planning their garden and wanting to join in this year’s colour theme, Communities In Bloom have selected orange for 2024.

“People will see lots of orange plantings around town this year, a lot of marigolds, nasturtium , cosmos, if anyone’s looking for easy ideas to support that colour,” said Baker.

The fruits of Napanee’s CIB members’ labour will start to pay off over the next couple of weeks as the first flower of the season-the daffodil-begins to sprout from the ground. Baker says Kathy Medd was busy last fall planting upwards of 600 bulbs in gardens across Greater Napanee. Several new tulip bulbs have also been planted to add an additional splash of colour to the gardens next to the Napanee River falls.
