Bulldogs on wrong end of goalfest against Prowlers

Much like their first meeting back on Opening Night, there were plenty of goals scored when the Deseronto Bulldogs visited the Cornwall Prowlers for an Eastern Ontario Senior Hockey League game on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, there was no thrilling comeback this time as they fell 9-7.

It wasn’t for lack of trying on their part as Cullen Hinds and Joey Mayer each scored in the final five minutes to get the Bulldogs to within striking distance. That formula worked for them on Opening Night, when they scored late and completed the comeback in overtime. This time around however the Prowlers shut the door and held on for the victory.

The teams alternated seven goals in the first period, with the Prowlers scoring first just under two minutes in. Hinds responded, only to see the Prowlers retake the lead. Wetering tied the game at 2-2, only to see the Prowlers once again take the lead. Mitch Merry knotted the game at 3-3 before a late goal gave the Prowlers the lead heading into the first intermission.

Merry struck again early in the second to tie the game before the Prowlers rattled off two unanswered for their first two goal lead of the night. Mitch Thompson cut the lead to one late in the second.

The Prowlers put the game away with three goals midway through the third to push the lead to 9-5 en route to the 9-7 victory.

Kira Hurley made the start for Deseronto, allowing nine goals on 47 shots before giving way to Greame Gemmill late in the third.

The loss drops Deseronto to 2-3 on the year. They are back in action on Nov. 2 when they travel to Maxville to face the Millionaires. They’re back home Nov. 9 to face the Prowlers. Puck drop is 6:30 p.m. at the Deseronto Community Rec Centre.
