Britt Benn gave Canada an early 5-0 lead in the gold medal game of the World Rugby Sevens Series in New Zealand, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 24-7 to the host Black Ferns.

It was still a strong showing for the Napanee native and her teammates, who finished with a silver medal.

Canada advanced to the finals with a 28-19 win over Australia. Canada was perfect in pool play, defeating Ireland, Spain and France.

Sunday’s silver medal showing marked the third time in four series matches this season Canada had finished in the top three. The second place finish pulled them up to third in the season standings with 62 points, just two back of Australia for second and 14 back of New Zealand.

Canada has already qualified for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo this August, but can improve their pool placement depending on where they finish in the World Series season standings.

Canada has four series left to play, starting with Sydney, Australia this weekend.
