A last second try in the quarter-finals cut short the Canada Women’s Sevens medal hopes at the Rugby World Cup, held this past weekend at AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA.
Canada had fought their way into a 19-19 tie with France thanks to a late try from Bianca Farella with just a minute left in regulation. The victory was short lived however as France responded with a try on the final drive of the game to seal the upset victory.
Canada then dropped the fifth place game 26-14 to Spain before rebounding to top Russia 22-10 to finish seventh overall.
Napanee’s Britt Benn had gotten the Canadians off to a great start in the tournament, scoring off the opening kickoff to help ignite a 43-19 win over Brazil in the Round of 16. From there however their quest for a medal was cut short by the stunning loss to France.
The tournament marked the end of Canada’s 2017-18 season. They will next be in action Oct. 20 for the USA Sevens, in Glendale, CO.
