Belleville man faces murder charge following County Rd. 2 collision Tuesday

A Belleville man is facing serious criminal charges after a collision on County Rd. 2 last Tuesday that took the life of an 88-year-old woman.

The man had been travelling through Napanee, driving  on Bridge Street at high rates of speed and the OPP’s attempts to stop his sports utility vehicle were unsuccessful.

The vehicle made contact with another between Old Hamburg and Switzerville roads, killing Florence Wyatt-Morris, the driver of the other vehicle.  The driver of the sports utility vehicle was taken to hospital with a serious injury.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit was called in to fulfill its mandate to conduct an independent investigation when someone becomes seriously injured or dies when a police officer is involved in an incident.

Meanwhile, the Napanee Crime Unit, under the direction of Det.-Insp. Dave Robinson, conducted a parallel investigation.  As a result of that investigation, Andrew Slapkauskas, 42, has been charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and flight from police causing death — all Criminal Code matters.

Slapkauskas was held in police custody pending a bail hearing.
