April will be recognized as Be a Donor Month in Greater Napanee, calling on all residents to consider the lifesaving impact of organ and tissue donation.

Council made the declaration at the request of Leslie Kimble. On April 7 the town will also celebrate Green Shirt Day, joining communities across the country in recognizing Logan Boulet, who passed away in the Humboldt Bronco’s bus crash. As a tissue and organ donor, he saved the lives of six people while enhancing many more. Following the tragic bus crash, many Canadians were inspired by Boulet’s story and registered to become a donor as well.

“I think this is a good cause your worship, I think we should be involved in this,” said councillor Terry Richardson. “There’s been some horrific accidents most recently involving folks that are local to our area and this request that we’re seeing tonight could come in awful handy and I think the timing of this is very good.”

Those interested in becoming a donor are encouraged to visit www.beadonor.ca.

-Town staff will continue to gather information on short-term accommodations licensing needs and best practices as they work on drafting a by-law to regulate locals who offer their properties for rent through websites such as Air Bn’B. Public comments can be submitted through Let’s Talk Greater Napanee.

-A total burn ban will be in effect for Greater Napanee from April 1 through May 15.

A total burn ban prohibits lighting any fires in open air and prohibits any activities that may start a fire, such as setting off fireworks. Any resident found in violation of the burn ban could face a fine of up to $200 plus any additional costs associated with Greater Napanee Emergency Services extinguishing an out of control fire.

A spring burn ban allows for spring vegetation to blossom while minimizing the burden of grass and bush fires.
