Yarker’s Jay Dearborn is Beijing bound as a member of Canada’s four-man Olympic bobsleigh team.

The 27-year-old, whose day job is a defensive back for the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, was named to the Olympic team late last month. He departed for China last Wednesday.

He’ll be part of the team piloted by Taylor Austin and is scheduled to compete on Feb. 18 and 19.

Dearborn’s mom, Liz Shibley, says his first taste of the winter sport was tobogganing in Wilton as a kid.

“Bobsleigh has become a huge part of my life in the past year,” Dearborn wrote on his website, Jaydearborn.ca. “The opportunity to compete on an international level is one I am looking forward to.”

“I know of the excitement and happiness my family and close friends feel while watching me compete,” he added. “Their ongoing support is what I think of last before stepping out onto the ice or field. This journey is for them as much as it is for me.”

The Beijing games are set to kick off Feb. 4 and run through Feb. 20.
